Tulamben

Tulamben was a very anonymous fishing village in the dry lands of Karangasem for a very long period. Nowadays, it’s the busiest diving destination in Bali. Since the discovery of the USS Liberty as a diving destination back in the 1980’ies, Tulamben has been drawing bigger and bigger crowds, all wanting to take a glimp at the USS Liberty. Tulamben can get very crowded during high season and it’s easy to see why. But the bay and surrounding villages have a lot more to offer than just the USS Liberty and can provide days of awesome diving!

USS Liberty Shipwreck

This is the most famous dive site in Bali. The USS Liberty Shipwreck is a 120 meter long shipwreck just 50 meters off the shore in Tulamben. It lies between 10 and 30 meters, with a small part a bit more shallow. This dive site has everything for everyone. It is the easiest wreck dive in the world. The Liberty is covered with coral and has an abundance of fish life around it. It has a few nice swim throughs and for macro lovers there are Nudebranches, Ghostpipe fish, Frog Fish and from time to time Pygmy Seahorses. For the early birds or the Night dive lovers, a school of Bumphead Parrot Fish uses the wreck as their private bedroom.

The dive sites of Seraya are famous for muck diving. Over the years, several dive sites make up Seraya and they all offer similar diving. Black sand, small patches of corals and Critters. Lots of them. In all colors and shapes. Things we have spotted here: Leptocaephalus, Boxer Shrimp, Harlequin Shrimp, Ambon Scorpion Fish, Mimic Octopus, stargazers, Dragonet, … During the right time of the year, this site is the Macro lovers heaven!

Kubu Monkey reef

  • Type: Shore Dive
  • Level: All Levels
  • Current: Mild
  • Depth: 5 - 30 meters

Kubu is a little town just 5 minutes from Tulamben but is quickly making a name for itself as a new diving destination. Monkey reef is a beautiful coral reef, similar to what is to be found in Amed. It’s a good alternative if Tulamben gets way too crowded and you want to do a nice, relaxing dive without hundreds of divers around. Expect a nice, gentle reef with all the usual (and unusual) critters.

Kubu Shipwreck ‘Boga’

  • Type: Shore Dive
  • Level: All Levels
  • Current: Mild
  • Depth: 10 - 30 meters

The Boga is a brand new dive site. In September 2012, the Boga was sunk just off the coast of Kubu, about 5 min away from the USS Liberty. The 85m long vessel lays between 18 and 30m, so it’s a wreck only accessible for people holding and Advanced certification. No real coral growth on the wreck yet, but the many Buddhist statues, the car and many other details make this a very interesting, fun new dive site. Just keep track of your no deco time.
